About Robyn

Robyn Gulley was born into a working-class family in the Twin Cities. Her mom was a dance teacher; her dad drove a bus for Metro Transit and was an ATU member. Robyn’s family always valued civic engagement, community, and solidarity. In the 1950s, Robyn’s grandpa was an auto-worker who was active in the UAW. He was elected Mayor of New Brighton in 1959, and even ran for Ramsey County Commissioner (Robyn and her sister helped). Union meetings and picnics were regular family events.

When Robyn was in middle school, her family moved to Wichita, Kansas. She then went to college in Santa Fe, New Mexico, before returning to Minnesota as an adult.

Robyn joined the staff at Take Action Minnesota to defeat the Voter ID constitutional amendment, protecting all Minnesotans’ ability to vote. She also became a contingent faculty member at both the University of Minnesota and Metro State University, where she was active in her Unions–SEIU 284 and IFO. In 2019, Robyn co-founded the non-profit institution, New Brookwood Labor College, which educates hundreds of Union members annually on organizing, bargaining and strike strategy as well as on how to run for elected office and continues to lead New Brookwood as Executive Director.

From an early age, Robyn noticed social and economic inequities. She was curious about how to make systems better for working families.

After studying political science in college, Robyn worked for the Sierra Club and the Human  Rights Campaign for 5 years, knocking on more than 130,000 doors and paving the way for marriage equality in Minnesota. She then enrolled at the U of M Humphrey School where she earned a Master’s Degree in Public Policy and then at Central European University where she earned a Master’s Degree in International Human Rights Law.

Robyn has lived in and around the neighborhoods of Senate District 65 most of her adult life–she has lived in Midway, Cathedral Hill, Downtown St. Paul, on the West Side. These days, she lives in West St. Paul where she owns a home and lives with her blended family- husband Jamie, daughter Emma and three bonus-kids, Lyla, Marlo, and Norah.

Robyn was elected to the West St. Paul City Council in 2020 and 2024. She was also elected by the state legislature to serve a six-year term on the University of Minnesota Board of Regents in 2023.

She served as the Education Director for the Minnesota AFL-CIO from 2022 – 2025 and is currently the Midwest Regional Director for the Doctor’s Council SEIU, the largest Union of doctors in the United States.

Robyn is passionate about Labor Rights, Healthcare, Housing, Public Transportation and Human Rights.
